Abstract: The development of the candy bar is recounted. The first candy bar was manufactured in 1894 by Hershey. Several of the original trade names are still on the market but the prices have changed. The ingredients of most candy bars are described (chocolate being the most popular). Wrapper design changes are illustrated for many bars. The popularity of some candies has faded and others have remained. The candy bar came into vogue after World War I. The number 1 candy bar for many years has been the Snickers bar (a chocolate-coated bar consisting of peanuts in caramel, on top of peanut-butter nougat). (kbc).
