Johnson (modern European/American art, College of Charleston, South Carolina) examines the European roots of the U. S. Symbolist art movement and previous unsuccessful attempts to offer an antidote to the prevailing realism (e. g. of the Hudson River school). A chapter each is devoted to the careers and subjective aesthetics of Allston, La Farge, Rimmer, Inness, and Ryder. Their artwork is featured in a dozen color plates and other illustrations. The volume lacks a subject index. Annotation 2004 Book News, Inc. , Portland, OR
