Sam Marsh, a geologist, and his wife Libby, are separated after the death of their baby. Libby becomes involved with a scuba diver, who becomes obsessed with Jacob's Well, a cave near Austin, Texas, that may lead deep into an aquifer. The three of them begin diving in the cave together, discovering its secrets and their own fates. The story and characters capture the languid pace of hot, humid Austin.
