And though hardly literature, the writing style and the sprinkling of quotations might appeal to those with a literary bent. Romance in the modern idiom it is not: the fast-paced action, the mandatory sex, the climactic fusion or explosion are foreign to its almost old-fashioned sincerity. In short, it is not for everyone (what book ever is? ); still, that not insignificant minority, for whom best-seller lists are as much a warning as an invitation, may find it an oddly satisfying experience.
