~ tracking down this book ~
Listed under the rubric of romance, the cyclothymic swings and bizarre fantasies of the protagonist have connotations of psychology. And though hardly literature, the writing style and the sprinkling of quotations might appeal to those with a literary bent. Romance in the modern idiom it is not: the fast-paced action, the mandatory sex, the climactic fusion or explosion are foreign to its almost old-fashioned sincerity. In short, it is not for everyone (what book ever is? ); still, that not insignificant minority, for whom best-seller lists are as much a warning as an invitation, may find it an oddly satisfying experience.
