Reviews the changing relationship between social work and social security during the past fifteen years in the UK. Explores the implications for social workers of the proposed introduction of a Social Fund which will replace the legal right to single lump sum payments for exceptional needs (Supplementary Benefit) by discretionary access, and the replacement of many such payments by loans.
